Need advice on axle seals, etc.

I just bought a '66 cj5 from a local mudder. I opened the diffy covers and found both diffys full of mostly water. I also pulled one hub and found it full of the same slightly oily water. OK so the axle seal is bad, at least on that one axle. I plan replacing all the hub end seals and regreasing everything and also cleaning out the diffys and replacing the fluid in them too. My first question is, should I inspect the bearings and act accordingly or should I just go ahead and replace them? Second question, I went down this morning and tried to find parts. I went to three different good auto parts places and including two the specialize in Jeeps. No one has a listing for the diffy covers gaskets, the FW drive flange gaskets or the RW grease slinger gasket or the RW oil seal gasket. FROM MEMORY, IIRC these are all just thin paper gaskets except the diffy gaskets and they are about 1/16" thick. Has anyone else had trouble finding these gaskets? Should I (a) try to make gaskets, (b) keep looking for factory gaskets or (c) just seal the stuff with RTV?

 

Dana 44 diff gaskets should be everywhere. Especially at places that specialize/deal with Jeeps. The Dana 25, 27, and 30 all use the same gasket so if you have a 25 or 27 just ask for one for a 30. Might try on line for other parts like the seals and what not. Look in the "where to buy parts" sticky at the top. Most places nowadays deal with newer vehicles than ours like YJ's, TJ's, etc. so they may specialize in Jeeps, but frequently only in newer Jeeps.
