Went to look at this M-416 today. Over-all excellent condition. It's all there as far as I could tell. Deck is solid and no holes noted anywhere else. The only things I noticed was the guy cut the rear panel and made a tailgate and hacked it up, one tire won't hold air and it's also missing the serial number plate.

What do you guys think? Is the "tailgate" a big negative? Worth $600?

For me, the tailgate work is a negative. The missing VIN plate is abig negative. I'm a known cheapskate and while the trailer does appear to be in good condtion, except the tailgate, I'd have a hard time giving more than 3 or 4 hunnerd for it. In PA, no VIN plate and probrbly no title is a HASSLE.

While I agree with the pricing in the $400 range...here in Florida a few of us have just registered them as a home made trailer with a weight of less than 500#. And we have the data plates on ours.

It's difficult to get an actual title here for a military vehicle..especially one that isn't motored. Not sure what the laws are in your state(s) but it may be something to check in to.

He has two others but not in as good of shape. They do, however, have the VIN plate. I'm wondering if the trade off of a VIN plate versus deck rust holes is worth it...Thanks to all that have responded.

The VIN tag doesn't bother me much, but I've never lived anywhere that I needed one for my 416.

However, the shoddy tailgate job does. I agree with the above assessments, lop off a couple hundred for that.

Mine was solid, little surface rust, some deformation in the bed floor, but sold it for ~$600 with no VIN no title, none necessary in OK/KS/NE where I've dealt with it.

I like the idea of a well made tailgate and plain to check with a local weld shop to see if they can repair this one. I don't see too many of these for sale in our area and am having a hard time letting it go...

From my experiences, a well made tailgate on one of these would be useful.

I actually like teh way they have the tailgate locking ont othe body. I havnt thoguht of a sliding pin setup throguh the top tubing. But it is a hack job in every other way.

That's probably the only good part of the gate.

supply, demand, and condition are always the three variables.
I'd try to negotiate and tell him why
    go from there....
but I'll bet he can find another buyer pretty easily.

i went to vintage power wagons in iowa to pick up a bed for a wc 51 & they had a pile of m416 trl tubs piled up, been a couple years ago. the wanted $250 each for them, no fenders. i only paid $250 for two complete nice m416 last time i bought any, but the boys here are right- kinda pricey for a hacked up trl.

A nice M-416 around here brings $750 all day long, but that is for a nice original one that is not hacked or modified and at worst has minor surface rust.
