If you pull the drive shaft out, do you need to put something in for fluid loss, dust/dirt contamination? I have not crawled under to look yet, but I'm used to the old automatics needing something to plug the hole.

Nope. The yoke is fixed on both sides. No ‘slip yoke’.

Also, you don’t need to remove the whole shaft, just axle side. If you are flat towing and no lockouts up front, then you need to do the same up front.

I flat tow mine (front hubs unlocked and rear driveshaft disconnected at the differential) at 60-65 mph with my Tacoma. Any more than that gets a bit squirrelly with my not so big truck. Probably go faster with a bigger tow vehicle...

Bought this Jeep about a year ago, very minimal rust, strong engine, but a noisy bearing when the transmission was in gear. Note the tow bar on the front, strongly suspected it was flat towed at some point with the transmission in neutral, t-case in gear (output shaft driven by t-case, cluster does not turn to pick-up oil) resulting in a burned-up rear bearing.

Finally got around to pulling the transmission out to rebuild it and found this (rear bearing)...

I read a lot of threads before flat towing my 71. Peace of mind for me personally to remove the driveshaft and it only takes a few minutes.
