So I got my JEEP registered this morning and I am now on my way to the Exhaust shop to quiet it down a bit. Long headers into short blown out glass packs aren't my bag.
Also they exit right under the driver and passenger seat and stink quite a bit. (and i will be tuning to bring the stink down as well!)

This pic shows my rig at the DMV this morning. Bikini top and it is trying to rain for the first time in weeks! I'm all reg'd and ready, woot

Any recommendations for mufflers and routing? I am thinking Flowmaster or Magnaflow but I can't see a good route out the back

I searched the forums and didn't find anything specific about this. There are lots of pics, but the only trucks that are showing that much belly are considerably higher and more modified than mine will be.

    thanks!

I like the aluminum tread plate on the muffles, does this really make a big difference? I assume it did but just asking. If it was worth while I will probably do this to help cool the floor pan.

Yes. I measured the floor temps before and after. I don't remember exactly what the difference was, but it was 60 or 80° IIRC.

Mine is actually getting new plumbing as I type. I've got the stock manifolds. I'm having them run the driver's side straight back to the front top side of the skid plate with a 90 to the passenger side where the passenger side ties in. They are going to then run it under the frame rail in front of the skid plate where the frame bends up. The muffler is going to be under the passenger seat, army jeep style. The guy at the shop recommended a Nissan v6 truck stock style "pancake" muffler. He said the nissan 6 cylinders are pretty loud and this one quiets them down pretty well.

I guess it all depends on what flavor you like and what manifolds you are running.

I'll put up some pics when I get it back

My boss played with exhaust routing for years in his Jeep to find out where the best noise level/minimal exhaust smell combination. He eventually figured out where Patrick has his exited was the best place for noise, exhaust fumes, and minimal exhaust trail damage. My CJ-6 is getting the exhaust exit placed just like that for those reasons.

WOW, thanks Patrick! Those are the pics I was looking for.
My exhaust guy didn't have time today so I just bought a couple of Thrush brand mufflers and had him weld them on with a side exit in front of the tire.
I will go back and do exactly what you did. Maybe adding a couple glass packs somewhere (the Thrush are better, but not by much, than the old glass packs).
I even like those tips and the exit is perfect!

It occurs to me now that I don't have to worry about shock and axle clearance as much as I was. I am going to REMOVE quite a bit of articulation with shocks and maybe sway bars. THAT'S right, I said it, REMOVE. I want a Desert Rat bumpy/wheels off the ground experience.

Meltdown, I like your stock style leanings but I haven't ever seen the stock manifolds. Maybe I will try to do something with the Buick setup I am looking at buying. I would like to get the exhaust inside the frame rails if I could. Seems like I need Ford power steering to get the driver side to route at all?

And coming back down. Exit bends are iffy, but everyone involved was in a hurry.

Last pic of the day. I polished the hood and fenders and parked in front of my neighbors CJ7. SADLY my truck did more miles today alone than his has done in the last year or so. He mainly moves it across the street for street sweeping day. I have never seen it drive away.

I recognize that DMV. That's where I got my plates also. I work near there.

Hey Rodney, You say you work near the Culver DMV? I wonder if you want to bring that wheel and column down with you sometime so I can check it out? Otherwise I get up your way pretty often for work. I'm sure something can get worked out.

Since you have a column can I assume you converted to power steering? What type did you use? I'd love to see your setup, I suspect I'll have to go that route in the not too distant future.

this reply may be late, but I used Flowmasters on my 57. I have a 283. Custom exhaust to exit the back. I am in the process of adding heat shields to lower the temp of the floor boards. I have some pics with the body off showing how I routed the exhaust. I have block hugger headers. Hope I didn't post too many pics..
    Paul

    1) exhaust out back. Driver side is the same.

    2) Mufflers are behind the nerf bars. You can see the exhaust coming out the the back.

3)Some pics with body off showing placement of exhaust.

Here are mine, granted, i am using a centered 44 rear, but i believe it would work with the offset rear as well. My prerequisite when i gave it to the exhaust shop was to keep the mufflers inside the frame rails if possible...he did a great job. The mufflers are positioned to minimize the heat transfer to the interior as well.

These are Thrush turbo mufflers, the smallest ones they make.

A really good exhaust guy can be your friend and a wizard. Many years ago I knocked the stock exhaust off my CJ5 in a short time. I put on some headers, but for me they were very unsatisfactory (probably a cheap set and used at that). Finally I went to an exhaust shop and told him to do his best. I told him I didn't really need a dual exhaust system as I knew with my PTO winch, the left side would be a problem. I just wanted no leaks and no rattles.

I got back and he told me that he liked the left side the best.

That was about 30 years ago, and the exhaust system is still on there! It works great!

    To see: http://www.zianet.com/jworman/jeepexh.html

When he went around the PTO U-Joint, he made the pipe square! When it finally rust's away, I hope I can find another wizard.
