Continuing the work on our 68' CJ5 and looking to replace the distributor as well. Doing some looking online, I have found that some have used a 76' Buick Regal distributor without issues. Some have used a HEI distributor but that some modifications need to be made. And others have sent theirs into RockAuto to have rebuilt. Curious what some of you with V-6's have done when it comes to the distributor. What have you installed and also, where did you find them?

    Thanks,

I prefer the delco unit with the window for points adjustment....although i don't run points anymore, I do like the delco unit as it accepts a pertronix ring and module and I think that has been a very nice upgrade (along with an upgraded coil). Many like the HEI upgrade and that may be worth considering. In other words, there seems to be three different ignition systems that people like: original points, pertronix and HEI. Depending on what system you prefer, that will determine which distributor you might choose to use.

    Delco distributor with Pertronix guts

    In that order.

    Prestolite distributors make great prelubers.

I run a Mallory dual point with a MSD oddfire control module. So technically I have a point triggered electronic ignition.

I'm firmly in the HEI camp. I can get parts for it at almost any parts store and a spare module (what may be unique and not at some parts stores) is cheap and easy to carry as a spare. I've got Pertronix on the wife's Mustang, and while a great upgrade, it would take a mail order to replace it.

I have an HEI in the green 5, and what a difference it made. The 6 has a Petronix which seems ok, but I will switch it out when I put the EFI in it.

I just installed Pertronix and coil last week. I had points before. So far, I’m really liking the Pertronix.

Believe its 1165. This is the one you want for oddfire v6....must be used with a delco distributor not a prestolite distributor.

I used the 1165 for a odd-fire dauntless V-6 along with a epoxy filled 3 ohm coil. They only make one version for the odd-fire engine.

yes - you are correct - I made the correction above. Think I accidentally posted the incorrect gm 2.8v6 option.

Yes, I used part number 1165 for the igniter and part number 40511 for the coil.

I've run them all, and I settled on the stock Delco distributor with Pertronix (and MSD box). If the Pertronix fails, I carry a Uniset in the glove box, takes 10 minutes to swap. If the MSD box fails, a flip of a switch bypasses it.
