I've run across 3 offset flanged 44s in the last 10 years or so.
Like a fool, I sold/traded the first two axles away.
When I ran across the 3rd axle, I decided to keep this one. (Thanks Ray, sdcj6)

It had a couple issues, the first being the inner pinion bearing race just fell into the housing.
It appears the inner pinion bearing race had been turning for some time.
    .
With the help of some talented, skilled and knowledgeable folks, the inner pinion bearing housing diameter was brought back to original specifications.

Next, an NOS Dana 5.38 ring and pinion were acquired.
A Detroit Tru Trac will keep the asphalt road manners mild.
All new bearings and axle seals installed.
New axle bearings and seal installed on the shafts.

I will build from my parts stock 11" rear brakes with new shoes and other components to complete this axle build.

With the old, complete Dana 44 FF rear axle spoken for, I won't have to cannibalize any parts to complete this build.

Although the Jeep is currently roadworthy, this axle will be in place around the end of July.

    A couple of photos:

This completes a 5 year plan to rebuild/replace or upgrade major components on this Jeep.
From the clutch back, every major component has seen service work performed.
The Buick 225 V6 is currently okay, and will maybe someday need something, but hopefully not in the immediate future.
This concludes the rebuild of the Jeep and may it give me, and/or a future Jeeper, another 30 years of service and enjoyment.

    Tarry

It came to me with 10"chers.

    I have 11"chers all around.
I didn't want/need to take the old 11" brakes off as I have others in reserve.

Sorry, I had no idea. It made no noise or any indication of being bad.

No worries Ray, all is good.
    How were you to know?
40 year old stuff eventually wears out

Just curious - why the switch to the flanged 44 from the FF setup?

So progress here is like mating elephants...it takes 2 years to produce results.
    Well, not really, but.....
I had a couple of used rear D44 flanged 11" backing plates taking up space.
    I cleaned and repainted them.
I then installed all new shoes, cylinders, springs, adjusters and hold down kits.
I went with stock 74-75 15/16 diameter rear cylinders.
I assembled them yesterday and am awaiting new brake drums.
I have the parking brake equalizer arms and cable levers for a cable operated parking brake.
I left these items out for now; parking brake will be another future project.

I also had a used heavy D44 cover I sourced from somewhere....
I cleaned and painted it as well.
It is much thicker and heavier than a regular stock Jeep D44 cover as shown in the photo.
Almost twice the thickness. The fill plug hole is for a threaded plug, not a push in rubber.
Soon, it will be time to put this all together and get it in the Jeep.

    Awesome.
I can't believe someone hasn't come up with a conversion kit from a tapered axle to a flanged, utilizing the tapered axle housing. Am I missing something here?

    Until then...My search continues.

There have been some over the years. It's not as easy as it sounds. My shop looked into doing it and decided against it. Not economically feasible for us. Might contact Dutchman Motorsports. I believe that's where Tarry99 got his.
