I have my engine completely torn apart and will be taking it to the machine shop next week. The block, crank, and heads are ready to go.

I'd like to get the rods check out while everything else it there. Should I take in the piston / rod assembly whole or is it normally torn down first? I have a press at work that I could use to press out the pins.

Also, the factory service manual says that there is a .040" pin offset to the high thrust side of the piston. Can anyone explain this and how to get the offset when pressing the pins back in :?

The pin hole is not centered in the piston, it is offset by .040". You do not need to be concerned about getting the offset when pressing the pins back in, it is there already.

The purpose is to reduce wear on the piston, due to the rotation of the crank, one side sees more force against the cylinder wall----the offset is an attempt to reduce this force.

    Thanks

I wasn't sure it was a side to side offset (pin axis) or one like you describe.
