Figured I'd post up progress on the trials and tribulations of the slow but steadier progress of my 69.

Just a background for anyone not on here when it all happened...

Drove to Pennsylvania to pick up the jeep the week before thanksgiving, 2003. Promptly wrecked jeep and truck in an accident involving me fishtailing on I75 in downtown Toledo, OH.
Reassembled with fiberglass tub and parts I had laying around and drove until July 4, 2006 when I killed the radiator at Silver lake Dunes. Got home and took the intake off because I had been having power issues the whole spring. Found out the cam was worn down and only running on 4 out of 6 cyl.

Beginning the 6+ years of "while I have this apart..."

I have everything put back together now. Rebuilt everything on the jeep including Wimpy's old rusted, worn out body. It's tweaked, but solid. I have the grill and fenders to replace and paint.

I got to drive it 2 days last week and on the second day coming back from work I had issues with fuel, exhaust popping, lurching around 50mph. Got on back road and going slower, no problems.

I've had issues with the carb float sticking, mostly due to the fuel draining out and the float sticking due to inactivity:oops: Trying to get the timing adjusted the last couple days and just can't seem to get the idle set and timing set all at once without the backfires on decel.

I found the original carb bowl and top today while going thru my shed and have the original 51 jets for the 2g. I have to make sure the jets aren't too big on the rebuilt carb I'm running now. I had been playing with jet sizes before I started tearing the whole thing down 6 years ago.

So today I brought my vacuum pump home from work and hit the vacuum advance on the distributor and can't get any vacuum whatsoever so the advance isn't moving. That can't be helping any at all.

So, I pulled the distributor in the fading sunlight while feeding a few hungry mosquitoes in the process and I'll take it to work tomorrow and see what I can do to get it working or find a new vacuum advance more than likely.

These are just a couple of thoughts. I have had my 71 for 34 years, so I have experienced all the problems you list here.
I've had trouble with the rochester 2g carb starving at high speeds, causing the lurching you are talking about. I now run the float level about 1/16" deeper than spec, seems to run better. I have also had the problem with the float sticking, but I have been avoiding ethanol fuel lately and that seems to have helped the sticking.

As far as the distributor, I am still running stock delco remy. I run it at 5 btdc as per spec, but I have found it important to plug the vac advance hose before doing the timing. I also make sure I am timing at the recommended idle speed. for my 71 that is 650-700 rpm. Prestolite distributors are either 5 or 0 degrees, depending on the model.

I have had stackfire on decel (out the exhaust) not backfire (out the carb). I had it with headers, I have it a little with the manifolds back on it. The valves just don't seat real well. I have redone the heads a couple of times, but the stackfire still comes back eventually. Probably have to have perfect valves, perfect valve train to avoid it. I've learned to ignore it, not too much of a problem with the manifolds back on.

I'll check the float. I have been playing with it trying to stop the fuel dumping out the vent. Might have it leaned out too much.
I think the biggest problem with the fuel spilling is the lack of driving. Fuel drains/evaporates out and the float sticks. Just need to drive it more. Has been better if I start it every couple days like I've been doing now.

The vacuum advance is fubar. I brought it to work this morning and pulled it off the dist. I can't pump any amount of vacuum. Looks to be original. I'll look for one local and then try summit/online somewhere.

Guess I should check my manifolds and exhaust connnections and make sure they aren't leaking air into the exhaust. It does smell a little rich though.

What ignition are you running on it? Might be time for HEI if possible.

stock delco-Reme distributor with msd 6a. I got a new vacuum advance from carquest. part #57-7520 for $17. Got back here after lunch and went to take the drive gear off and noticed it was chewed up a little and that it has alot of endplay. There's some kind of washer inbetween the drive gear and housing and its about gone and the housing is chewed up.

So yea, might be looking for another stock one and posibly hei. I had an hei at one point. I installed the msd and it made a huge improvement. Stuck the hei on and since I allready had the msd it didn't do much over the stock dist. So I guess it depends on what kind of a deal I can find.
