My parking brake cable snapped just below the metal ball within the handle. Is this something that can be repaired or using locally sourced parts at say a NAPA? (I had plans to go offroading this weekend and the parking brake would be a better safety feature than a bunch of chocks)

Ultimately the cable needs to be properly replaced anyways. When I bought the Jeep it was binding badly, I fixed it, but apparently the damage was already done. Does the Mitsubishi's attachment to the handle (a ~1/4" ball) match the US CJs'? I've read that there are a few different cable lengths, if I measured mine from the correct points (back of ball to start of threads at adjustment bolt), then the cable is 51.5".

Here are pictures to help, you can see the small ball that broke off:

I welded a small nut on mine then ground the points round to fit inside the sliding rod. Works for a temp deal.

I found this part with 2 day shipping for cheap: Omix-Ada 16730.03 Parking Brake Cable; it's 63-5/8" overall, so I'll have 8-9" extra to deal with, but it looks like the best fit. The other options were 69.5" overall (Napa 92590), 44.5" overall (Omix Ada 16730.02), or a rebuild kit (same price as a new cable). I inspected it closer and found too many nicks and bends in the casing, so rebuilding doesn't seem worth it. And the quick shipping means that I should have it installed for the weekend. Any recommendations on properly handling the extra length?
