I am putting the original steering back under my 64 cj5 frame. I have purchased three Jeeps and now have enough to put one together all original. A 60, a 63,s and a 64. I am using the 64s frame and body, have the ross steering box, and complete steering off 63. The bellcrank is riveted to the frame and also welded. Someone has done a sag swap on 64 allready and cut the bellcrank plate off. They did a pretty fair job so I think I can use bolts and attatch bellcrank plate from 63 on then weld it. has anyone else tried this?

I know that the steering system I am taking off is way better than the ross and bellcrank. I have eveything to make the jeep original again. The jeep will be used for slow drives not farther than 20 miles one way. I don't plan to do any crawling, maybe a dirt road or a trip up into pasture that is all.

The steering shaft that is in the 64 was meant for an V6 conversion and I have since put brackets back on it for the F134 engine. The steering shaft hits the exhaust and the engine mounts right now and I don't see anyway of fixing issue without major fab to the frame, engine mounts, and the exhaust.

If I were you I'd put a wanted ad in the classifieds for the proper steering box, that would be the best route to solve your interference issues.

Yeah, something wrong there. The V-6 is bunches wider than the F-134 engine.

Are you sure you have the narrow ross box made for the V6?

Sorry for the confusion, I am putting the original f134 engine back in. Someone had cut the brackets for the f134 off the 64 frame and was putting a V6 225 in. They had also done the steering swap with V6 engine mounts. After installing the original mounts including the battery tray the swapped steering system contacts the engine mounts and the exhaust. So I am putting the ross steering box back in. I am also planning to bolt the bellcrank bracket back onto crossmember and then weld it. Has anyone done this conversion and had any luck/problems?

I have not done what you are going to do but see no problems with it, especially if you can turn the frame over to get a good weld and fix any scabs left from removing the bracket.

Actually, nothing really wrong with using a Ross box and still wheeling the Jeep. My experience is that you just have to keep on a Ross with proper maintenance to keep it tight. That can be a somewhat pain in the butt compared to a saggy where once in, it rarely needs any attention.

Well got it done today, everything went well and of course the bellcrank has a bunch of slop. I used grade 8 3/8 bolts to bolt the bellcrank back on the frame and plan to have a buddy weld it also. He used to be a machinist and I wouldn't trust my weld on such a important component. I also took the bracket off the frame for the other steering box. The welds for the brackets were not pretty but I had a heck of a time getting the thing off the frame.
