Rusted oil pan...

    In the process of getting motor ready to go, I washed the 50 year old gunk off of engine and ran into possible issue. The oil pan is rusted badly and am wondering about how thin it actually is. I have found a pan for sale but it is for a L134, I have a f134 and don't know they will interchange. How thick is the metal used in a oil pan, and should I even be worring about it.



    I am really hoping to get everything together in time to load family up to watch fireworks from jeep on the 4th. I keep plugging along but the small stuff is making me sweat...

    The pan should be the same. IMHO if you question the integrity of the pan, now is the time to replace it, not once its in the Jeep and it starts to seep. Also, if it is thin in spots, a good whack on a rock might cause a failure out on the trail.

    If it makes you feel any better I've got the same issue on my '73 right now. :(

    I am 90% sure the pans are the same...i agree with Steve they are cheap and easy to find so if you have doubts change it. I literally just gave two away last week :(

    They use the same block according to the books. Would think that means the pan will fit. Unless, of course, they use different bolt patterns between the two.

    The F head was developed from the L head engine and they share a lot of features but they most definitely do not use the same block.

    The f134 engine has valves in the head and in the block. The l134 has valves in the block only... So the blocks are not the same. That being said I ordered the pan and gaskets, no use going through all the work of puting this thing together to loose the oil and ruin the motor. Hope the pans are the same, guess I will find out when it getts here.

    Well the pans are the same. I recieved the pan in the mail yesterday and installed after painting the engine. I found some grey for the block and head, then painted the valve cover, the tappet cover, and the new oil pan black. The thing looks pretty good.
    I will put engine, transmission, and transfer case in frame tommorro. Have the carb in the dip tank will go through it after all the heavy lifting. Thanks for the help.

    Hello everyone, I had a ahh darn it moment today. I walked up to engine on the stand and there on the floor was a puddle of the brand new oil I just put in the day before. First thing that went through my head was my braising job didn't hold. The pan I got was not new and the very bottom of pan had a couple of pitted spots in it so I fixed them. All I could think of was having to pull the pan off and try to figure out what I did wrong. Then it hit me is it possible the plug was loose when I got it, I had not even checked it. It was loose, glad I found it now and not later. Guess I got lucky.
