Hey guys-I've been a reader for a little while but first time poster. Just a little history-I had a '76 CJ5 in college(in the '80s) for weekend play, after that I picked up a '66 CJ5 that was a trail rig/mud racer that I still have waiting for me to get a"round-to-it". My girlfreind at the time actually rolled this one on pavement but I raced it the next weekend,She's my wife of 12 years know. And I also have a '65 CJ5 with a 6' plow and a fancy camo paint job(by others).Anyways-to the subject. My uncle is giving me a 47' willys CJ2A(is that right?). The body on the '65 is just about falling down around the frame, I think the hardtop is holding it together, but it runs like top and the drivetrain is pretty decent. The '47 has a decent body but I'm not sure of the motor and drivetrain. It's been in Georgia for a number of years and not run for who knows how long. I guess what I'm looking at is taking the two and making a better plow rig. Will the L & F head engines interchange, trans, t'case, axles, can I run one and keep the other parts? Sorry long post!

    Hi CJ (?)

Re exchaning parts between the Jeeps, I guess the best answer is "it depends." There are lots of similarities, and some of the drivetrain can be swapped; axles, transmission and transfer case. There will be differences you'll have to work around.

If you're asking, 'can I put the '2A body on the '5 frame', yeah, it can be done. Here's a link http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/FrameCJ5.html ... A '2A has a shorter hood than a '3B, but the same otherwise. The f-head from the '5 will poke through the hood unless you cut a hole (tacky) or use a shorter carb. Unmodified, the f-head is too tall to fit under the flat hood.

Hello and welcome from down state!

You might be suprised on the tough old L-134 in the 2A. It may just fire up but oil pressure may be an issue.

We just rescued a '48 last summer that was sitting for at least 5 years! It fired right up, smoked, and oil pressure was an issue. It developed a rod knock several weeks later. (V6 waiting to go in now :D)

You may be fine. These things are like old tractors --just keep going!

One thing you may want to think about - you can basically pull the 5 drive train and put it under the 2A (sans engine) or put the 2A body on the 5 frame without much modification (my '46 is sitting on a '70-71 frame and drive train). If the engine is an issue, go with the V6 as it will tuck under the body of the 2A's.

Thanks for the replys. I didn't know about the difference in height between the F and L heads. I do have some thinking to do about what to save/exchange/convert etc. It will help having the '47 here to tinker with but that won't be 'till March. Michigan Pinstripes-believe me I know about these little "go devils", the '65 I picked up for 200 bucks. It was a plow vehicle before but didn't have any power, I had a hard time driving it onto my trailer-its a wonder what a correct firing order will do, two of four were wrong(DUH to the previous owner)!! Am I correct that the '47 has a Dana 25 front/44 rear, I beleive the '65 is27 front/44 rear. Spring spacing is the same? If I had to could the '65 trans be swapped out for the '47 trans? Ditto the t-case/. This is just for incase one of these were to fail during the plow season-it's long up here. What about a hard top for the '47, I assume these can be found? I'm looking forward to getting my new family member!
    Happy Trails and Merry Christmas.
