I'm piecing together my drivetrain, currently have a 231 V6, a rebuilt SM465 with the Novak adapter to a D18, and I'm about to start rebuilding the D18. I know I need to get the bearing retainer/bellhousing machined to fit, and besides driveshafts, the last thing I need to figure out is the clutch.

I've done a search on this, but haven't really found an answer. Which clutch will work for this application? I was thinking of going with maybe a centerforce, or a luk. Can anyone point me in the direction of what will work with both the SM465 and the 231 V6? Does anyone have the part numbers/sources for this? I'm thinking the stock clutch fork will work, does that sound right? Will the stock T/O bearing work? I can probably find a longer one locally if it won't.

Thanks for your help on this, I've never done this before so I'm slowly working my way through it.

You will need to mix and match. You will need the V6 clutch cover that bolts to the flywheel. Then you will need the correct disc wi the same spline count as the 465, and be the same size as the cover so it will fit. Take a look at Centerforces's charts. they will give you the vehicle info in the tables, then you can either get the centerforce or go with a stock unit. The throwout bearing will probably be the stock one as well as the fork.As for a pilot bushing i am not sure.

The stock clutch for a t14 or buick v6 powered jeep should fit as the the sm465 and t14 share the same size input shaft 1 1/8"-10 spline. Pilot bushing is the same minor diameter of .590.

If Billy would get my transmission page up, it has all the specs for about every transmission you would need or want!!

He's right... I had a relatively new clutch behind the V6 in my Jeep when I decided to swap it out for the 283 Chevy. The pressure plate bolts right up to the SBC small flywheel and the clutch disk from the T-14 works on an SM-465.

I just got the flywheel resurfaced, and am about to order the clutch. My engine is a 1976 231, which came stock with a 9.5 inch clutch. From what I've read, the 225 V6 came with a 10.5 inch clutch. The splines on my current clutch match the SM465, so I'm assuming a stock replacement clutch for my engine would work.

My question is, if I ordered a stock replacement clutch for a jeep with a 225 V6 so that I get the bigger 10.5 inch clutch, would the larger pressure plate bolt up to my flywheel? Would this work, or am I missing something?

I was thinking of getting the clutch kit from www.partsamerica.com for $149. Would I be better off going with that, or getting one from the local NAPA?

    Thanks for your help.

I used a stock V6 clutch (new of course) when I did the 1" SM465 swap. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE MAINSHAFT ENDPLAY .000-.002. I followed the Novak directions (two years ago) and set the endplay @ .012. That caused the end of the mainshaft to get chewed up.
Lucky for me Novak stands behind their products and gave me a new shaft and misc parts to repair the problem. Give Eric a call to make sure you've got all the parts you need. He sent me a .010 shim that I ended up putting behind the rear thrust washer to get the endplay close to what it needed to be.
Overall it's a wonderful setup. I just hope this is th last of the problems I encounter.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

I have a 231 V6 with the smaller 9.5 inch clutch, would a clutch from a 225 that is 10.5 inch in diamter work? Would the larger pressure plate bolt up to my flywheel?

buick used to different flywheels in that era. one was a stepped surface and the other was flat. if you have the stepped wheel your chances of a 10 1/2" dis working are slim to none. if you have the flat wheel it will probably work....good luck
