If all goes well, I should be ready to paint my frame within the next few weeks. Which brings up the next question, what coating to use? My frame has been wire wheeled and will be pressure washed and wiped with brake clean before painting. The are a few areas of minor rust pitting.

    Rustoleum
    POR-15
    Eastwood Rust Encapsulator
    Rust Bullet
KBS Coatings Frame coater kit - http://www.kbs-coatings.com/frame-coater-kit.html
    Hammerite
    MasterSeries Coating - http://www.masterseriescoatings.com/index/
    Zero-Rust

Lets hear everyone's experience with any of the above mentioned coatings. :) Feel free to add to the list if I've missed any.

I've used Hammerite before on the underside of the Jeep's floorboards and on the new fuel tank. The floorboards are holding up pretty well after 7 years with only a few very tiny areas of rust showing. The fuel tank still looks new after 2 years but most of that time has been in the garage.

I'm kinda leaning towards trying the Rust Bullet (based on my online reading) and then top coating it with Rustoleum.

I fear that this is like asking about religion or politics or Chevy vs. Ford. But, I used POR-15 on my frame and have been extremely happy with it. Sort of pricey but it looks like it stands up extremely well.

I had the best luck with the Rust Bullet on the wife's Mustang. I liked it better than any of the POR stuff I have seen.

After a thorough sandblasting I used POR & topcoated with a urethane.

If I was doing it again I'd probably use an epoxy primer- if you have a spray gun it's faster, seals as well & is easier to topcoat.

Put hammerite on my frame in 1994 and I still can't get it off.. One coat, $80 a gallon.. Can't go wrong.. I have two gallons waiting to go on the frame, roll cage, axles and whatever else I can find to coat with it again during this reconstruction..

Been thinking about doing my pickup truck frame & mechanicals as well - which will be a mixture of light surface rust and OE coatings. Any of these work well in those conditions? I've used POR (pain to apply) and Hammerite (sold everything that I had painted so not sure how it lasted) in the past.

I used POR-15 on my '57 when I took it down to the frame in 1999 or so. For the most part it has held up well. But....there is a lot of prep involved with it, and the areas that I didn't do meticulously have since peeled off in sheets, leaving rusty spots. I would do some sort of epoxy primer and a good impliment type enamel paint if I had to do it over again, which it sounds like I do!

I used Chassis Saver by magnet paint a year ago and it has held up well, though the frame has just been sitting in the garage. Cheaper than POR simply because it isn't as well known but still a good product. Epoxy primer seems like the way to go in my opinion. I will do that if I ever have to do it again.

I used Rustoleum products. Brushed on red oxide primer followed by brushed on satin or semi gloss black. It had lots of time to cure as it was several years before I had the JEEP road ready. It has held up very well in off road conditions. I do not take it out in the salty PA roads in the winter. I used the same process on the Park, which, unfortunately, is also benefitting from extreme cure times before actually seeing use. I'd do the next one the same way, and the one after that.

    Good info so far!

I like the idea of using an epoxy primer but:

    1. I don't have an HVLP spray gun nor the experience with one
    2. My frame is not sandblasted and I assume that the primer needs a very clean and smooth surface to adhere to

I used a PPG epoxy primer followed the next day with an eastwood single stage urethane on my frame. Frame was wire wheeled and selective areas were media blasted (with black beauty). Painted with primer within 2 hrs of blasting it. Frame is beautiful.

Hammerite I brush on and it finishes smooth by itself.. comes in colors and textures as well. It can be painted over pretty much any surface... I wire wheel clean and apply.. no probs..
