Tried searching, but did not come up with an answer I was looking for.

Working on a '57, F-134, Ross Steering. The tube that is the steering column has rusted through and broken at the dash clamp, shaft and box are fine. This is a rebuild not a restoration, so original parts are not a concern. My question is, has anyone replaced the column tube with something else other than a jeep column that might be more readily available. Such as plain old steel tubing? If so, what did you get, where did you get it, and how did it work? Is the tube just cut flush at each end and clamped in the steering box clamp or are there notches or anything at each end? Just looking for some experience, suggestions before I start tearing into it just to find out I need a actual jeep part.
