Hello, I'm a newer member here and I'm a little late in posting my build thread. I post the pics in order to get caught up.

At the time I'm not going to do a frame off restoration, I have too many other projects going on, as for paint, I have a make shift paint booth in the back yard (shed) but my compressor is in my garage so it wont reach, so I'm going the rattle can method. It's not in my budget to get it professionally painted because I have one of my other vehicles going in for paint real soon!

Anyways here we go, I have a lot to learn this is my first jeep, I've been reading all that I can find.


Here's day 1, taking delivery, it had been sitting in a storage lot for 3 years with no top or anything on it.

 

My goal for now is to clean it up a bit, and make it road worthy.

The problems.... Tires are shot, dry rotted and full of fix a flat, Tail lights stay on when battery is hooked up, I need to clean up the wiring, it has a lean on the drivers side, and no brakes!

Here's the fix to all of that!


Pro Comp 32x11.5x15 MT's, Pro Comp Super 8's 15x8 wheels, Best Top Soft Top, Sky Jacker Leafs and Springs. All new Brake hardware

Top, Wheels and Tires on, I flushed the Radiator, thats why the kiddy pool is there.

 

Doing some minor bumper base body work. Removing rust etc...







And bumper repainted

 

Installed the summit heater, so far I haven't tested it.

There is a block off plate where the old heater was.




Re-Painted dash, Added heater vents, as well as gauges


I need to untangle the wires and see why my tail lights stay on when the jeep is off. I replaced the brake light switch, and it didn't fix the issue, any suggestions?

 

While the dash was off, I figured I'd paint some parts before I put it back on so I don't have to remove it again.



I eventually painted it gloss black. I know it won't be seen but my goal was to remove the surface rust.

Blasted and painted some other misc dash parts.

Brake lights or tail lights on? In either case just start tracing the hot wire from the lights forward until you find where the power is coming from.
Looking good though, just from the first post I spotted a Warn OD, HEI, and a power steering pump. Looks like the jeep came with some good upgrades.

 

I'm really not sure, they are LED lights so they don't need to get much power to light up, but the passenger side light get's a lot more power than the drivers side tail light. I removed the brake light switch competly and hooked the battery back up, same issue. I just need to trace the wire's and see where the issue is.

Thanks for the comment, yes it has the Warn OD, HEI and a Saginaw swap. I need to read up on a fuse box install, and disc and power brake install.

 

Thanks for the link, if i can't figure out this tail light situation I may just order me a new wire harness.

 

Here's some progress of the fenders, took a while to sand but they turned out pretty nice.

Dad was wrong - Krylon WILL work for something besides lawn mowers and wheelbarrows!! Nice job. What are you using as a primer or base coat? I've had problems getting canned spray paint to work. Cleaning really well with paint thinner seems to help a bit.

I will keep checking your build I wan't to know when and how you fixed your taillights

Boy, this brings back some memories. My '71 was flat back primer when I got it way back when. I still kinda dig that color. I'd go back to it if it made any sense at all for me. Nice project. keep up the good work.

 

Here's a few updated pictures, I'm done with the body work til spring. I've sanded and re-painted everything I can remove, all I have left is the body and the roll cage to repaint.

Still have to mount the mirror and a few other things but you get the idea.

After - Still gotta hide the wires, mount the grab bar, and the glove box and door.

 

That foam air cleaner in that unit is prone to catching on fire in my experience with that style. Otherwise, nice unit.

 

I agree, I've already singed most of before tuning the motor, lots of carb backfires and spitting up fuel on it. It's going to be replaced one of these days. I have the factory oil bath air cleaner but it looks like a hassle to install.
