Has anyone shaved the head of the L-134 to try and boost compression and horsepower? If you've tried it, or knkow anything about it, I would be interested in hearing from you.

    Thanks,

Both of my L-heads have the kaiser supersonic head on it which is supposed to boost compression. Not sure how much of a difference it made, they both came with that head....

    The difference will be minimal.

I ran an L-head for years in several Jeeps and they do what they were designed to do perfectly. You can make a lot of little improvements here and there, but you still have a long-stroke small-bore flathead engine that makes ~ 60 HP. As they say, "it is what it is."

Look at it this way, even if you find a way to make a 10% HP gain, that is still only 6 HP and you're now up to a whopping 66 HP. Contrast that with the same 10% gain on a stock SB Chevy (200HP stock, 10% increase = 220HP) and you start to see where this is going.

I'm not saying you shouldn't try to improve your L-head, not at all. I did a bunch of small things to my last Jeep and was very happy with the results, but I also accepted that it was still a 1930s design that was never going to be a powerhouse.

I think they shaved my head when i got the engine rebuilt. theres no telling how much it improved though. Theres some good info on hop up parts and stuff for the 134 on the HAMB forums. Someone could truely make a good living off of reproducing those super rare aluminum goodies. If i only had a forge... :)
