I guess a better question would be given the same situation and driving, would a 33x10.5 stress an axle more or would a31x13.5 (does diameter mater more than width?).

Think of it as contact area and pressure. If you have a large contact area with lower pressure on that area you will get float or break traction. If you have a smaller area with the same pressure, you will have more traction and it won’t break loose as easily (thus more stress on the internals). Diameter will determine the amount of torque force needed to turn to break loose, or a shaft given the same variables… Clear as mud?

So a 33-12.5 will put less stress on a shaft than a 33-10.5 because there is less pressure psi on the wide tire and it will break loose sooner. Where does this curve invert? Does a 33-15.5 still put less stress on an axle than a 33-12.5?

I don't break my equipment. Can't afford doing so.

I also am not stupid enough to go out and try to climb a sheer rock wall with it, like I have seen some do.

What I have does just fine running around the Arizona desert. What you can get to anymore. They keep closing off more and more of it.

Ran 30x9.5x15' s for a couple of years after I got this one, up until I sliced three down on cactus spines at the same time. Haven't had the extra to replace them, but I will.

Its not quite that simple since by definition a 33X12.5 will weigh more than a 33X10.5 and usually, as the tire size goes up, the wheel weight increases as well. I never did find an 'exact' - for me it was defined by driving style and where you wheel. Here in CO, float in mud = stuck based on everything I have seen, where dig = go as long as the hole isn't too deep then it = pull cable. I also get better traction with the 10.5s (I run 31s on stock and 33s on D30s) vs almost all other sizes I have run.

    Just based on experience.
