My dauntless starts, runs and idles increadible. But I've noticed a series of taps coming from the lower end/oil pan. It only happens at idle and comes and goes. Dosn't effect performance. I changed my oil pan gasket a while ago and checked the tolerances on my lower end bearings using plastigage, and they were all right on. Is this an obvious sign of anything in particular?

Check your exhaust. A leak will sound like a tappet sometimes. A rod or main bearing failure is usually a hard knocking sound.

This happened to me years ago.. I serached and searched.. turned out the tensioner on the timing chain broke so at idle the chain would flap around and make a sound lieka bad rod bearing.. drove me nuts and I only found it after it was too late and the chain ate itself..

Try a mechanic's stethoscope (a long screwdriver against your ear) to locate the source precisely. Be careful of moving parts!
