I just mounted my hydraulic clutch slave cylinder, from Novak, and I have a question for the collective Jeep mind.

The slave cyl has an internal spring that is currently pushing the piston out away from the bottom of the bore. Same as if the pedal was pushed all the way down.

It seems to me that the spring should be pushing the piston back into the bore, to drive the fluid back to the master cylinder when the pedal is released.

There is an external spring between the slave cyl mount, and the throwout arm, but it is not strong enough to overcome the spring that is internal to the cyl. In my previous experience, an external spring like this is for the purpose of keeping slack out of the linkage------piston, push rod, and throwout arm. And, to pull the throwout bearing off the pressure plate fingers.

The way things are now, the throwout bearing will be continuously riding on the pressure plate fingers, not a good thing at all.

I called Novak, and they were quite befuddled by my question, had to check and call me back. The guy who returned my call said that is how they always put them together, but he did not sound like he even understood what I was talking about.

What say ye out there in Jeepland?????

Well - I am running thier clutch setup on my '51 and have been for quite some time even though it's on a AA bell houseing... No problems.

As an aside, I can 'see' what your talking about, but I do not believe it's enough to warrent an issue. I can actually hear when things engage as the pedal is pushed, and I honestly do not consider it to be a wear out issue. I will say that I am pulling things this winter to redo some bolts on the BH, and will be able to give you an exact picture then if you want.

Normaly on the pushrod you suppose to have something to adjust the linkage to the pivot arm, try to adjust it so when you doesn't push on the clutch pedal all the system get in balance and no force come along the slave cylinder. Like you said the external spring is to make sure the throwout doesn't get int touch with the clutch. So the spring cannot do his job if there a restriction coming from the slave cylinder.

I'm not a professionnal but that sound good to me...hope it can help!!!
