So I managed to "booger" up the threads on the axle shaft, and now the castle nut will not go on. Does anyone know what the threads per inch on a DANA 44 rear axle tapered shaft is? My plan is to run a die on the threads (1"x ??? threads per inch, fine thread). I guess worse case scenario, use a jeweler's file to clean them up, but they are in fairly bad shape. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance guys!!!!

I've used thread files to fix odd and bigger size bolts or threads I dont have a die for.. I think they work pretty good.

I took my castle nut to fastenal and he matched a thread chaser to the nut thread. Worked for me.

I had a similar experience years back when I owned my 64 CJ-6. The hub was so difficult to remove, the puller screw flared the end of the axle shaft. Ended up slitting the hub down to the keyway with a hacksaw ( fun!) to get it off. I had a machinist chase the threads on a lathe for the cost of a thread die. In my case, the axle end was so screwed up, it would have been difficult to start a die on the threads.

As long as the end of the shaft hasn't been flared out, this should be all you need.
