I am getting ready to do a bunch of upgrades to my Willy's. I got a hold of a York compressor and I want to mount it up.

I'm looking for ideas for location on a 231 that already has a GM power steering pump mounted up. It looks to me that the only place that there is room is over the distributor.

What do the experts say? Any feedback and/or pics would be great.

    Thanks.

I'm gonna mount mine sorta behind the dana 18 and run it off of my dana pto using belts. Always thought this would be a cool way to mount it and a neat use for my PTO unit. Sort of old school in the thinking and the cool factor would be great.

That would work nicely, but not in my situation. I have and overdrive on the transfer already.

    Thanks for the reply.

The other and bigger problem mounting a York under a Jeep is DIRT. You will need a remote air cleaner if you want it to last and that will make the pump less efficient.

Can you remount the alternator high and place the York on the right front? I used that arrangement on my sbc and it works well but I also had to come up with a 3 groove water pump pulley that was a bit of a challenge-which may not be a problem with the Buick as the water pump is farther forward (I use the Chevy short pump-no room for a long one).

duffer, Could we have a pic of the bracket?
and would you suggest running a line from the York suction port to the engine air filter,
similar to the PCV, it would take less space compared to a separate filter?

I used the stock york base (slightly modified) from an 84 waggy and made the pieces to mount it off the right head. Due to the short pump, it actually needed to extend past the head which I do not think you will need to do. That said, I have no idea what head mounting holes are available on the 231. For what its worth:

Here are the pieces that swing the stock bracket off the head:

    The assembled unit:

It is braced from both above and below as can be seen in the last pic.

As to the air cleaner, I think it is best to have a dedicated unit. My reasoning is that presumably the engine air cleaner will have a negative pressure and the York will be fighting the engine for that air. I just made a fitting and mounted mine directly to the York.

Thanks for the input guys. I was wondering if I would have hood clearance probs with the York over the alt. but looking at cj5/442's set up that shouldn't be an issue.

I have yet to actually get out there and mock it up. Once I finish playing in the hills with the Jeep this season, I'll get to it. I'll try and post progress pics...
