I would very much like to get my hands on a M416 type trailer, but I don't want to wheel a collector piece. Is anybody reproducing them? Body parts? Or kits?

Kaiser willys sells a replacement bed for the Bantam trailer ($1500), which is basically the M416 with different fenders. Sierra 4x4 makes a new one which is beautiful but will cost you $3000+. Conqueror and others build fully decked out expedition type M416's that will run $5000+. Canada made their version of the M416 up until the 90's called the M101 CDN. You should be able to find one in great shape in some of the northern states or canada for roughly $800.

If you're interested in using your eventual M416 for camping or travel, the expeditionportal website has a great subforum on trailers where this style of trailer is very popular. Check it out! :)

I've bought several pop-up tent trailers that had rotted or torn up tents very cheaply. They're not nearly has rugged as the military trailers but they're very light and tow beautifully. They're ok for on road use but most have small tires so don't even think about over loading them or trying to use them for off-road use. The Bantam or 416 trailers are highly sought after by the collectors so be prepared to pay big bucks if you have your heart set on one of them. People have good reason to gloat when they find one in any condition for under a grand!

I have a friend that makes trailers for offroading. I'm not sure if he has ever made a M416 type, but you could always ask. His website is http://pikespeaktrailers.com/.

I really like Pikes Peak trailers!!! Jeepforum (Gasp!) was doing a giveaway a few months ago for one and I was smitten! Pricier than I can afford though :(

M101 CDN are really heavy duty! Saw on at the bantam fesival that a guy had done up, it was fantastic, the gauge of the metal is way heaver and it has reenforced corners as well.

After lurking on this forum for a couple of years I have noticed thread after thread about "wish I could find one of these", what ever it may be, there very few drawings posted for building things from scratch. These military trailers are originally fabricated from sheet metal and can be measured and formed up from sheetmetal and be close to the real thing. If one of you people that has access to one of these trailers that has drawing skills would do that and post the drawing for the rest of the forum you could really make a contribution and be some what of a hero. I was in the business for 35 years and had to pull the plug on it because of health issues but can still make suggestions. I am on several other forums from tractors to sports cars and that is what happens on them. This is not rocked science but a nice accurate set of plans would make the job really easy. I have an original 64000 mile 59 cj5 and a 46 Ben Hur trailer. The cj sat in a building in Phoenix for the last 30 years and the trailer sat outside but was maintained.

    good luck
    Glen
