I'm getting ready to do a disc conversion on my '60 CJ5(D25 front axle). I read the article by Steve Lane(http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/brakes/early-cj-disk-brake-swap/). I am still unclear on a couple of points.

The article mentions using caliper mounts from Mike Kirkus at completeoffroad.com. In checking out the site, I'm not finding anything specific for my application. Also, are the Chevy caliper mounting brackets needed? I can't tell from the pics in the article what is what.

When going this route, will I still be able to get the snap ring that holds the axle into the hub in? By adding the mount bracket and rotor, it seems to me that the axle will come up a little short.

    Any input is appreciated guys.

The caliper brackets are from a Chevy/GMC 1/2-ton 4x4 such as a K10. Sometime around 1978 I believe they started going metric, so make sure you know what year parts you are buying so you can buy new calipers that are correct for the mounts.

You should have no trouble with the snap ring, the axle has a good deal of play in it that should allow it all to work. The caliper mount really isn't all that much heavier than the original backing plate.

BTW- I did this conversion quite a few years ago, and I don't have a pick-a-part yard anywhere near me. You can get the mounts and used calipers (cores) at the boneyard for cheap. The trick nowadays is finding a yard that still has any old trucks left lying around. With the price of scrap metal lately they have been making more $$$ selling everything for scrap than they are parting them out!

Thanks for the quick reply! So I don't need any other caliper mounting accessories other than the stock Chevy pieces? That would be great!

I have a buddy that owns a junkyard. He'll be on the hunt by this afternoon...:)

    Excellent article BTW.

Just the caliper mounts with or without backing plates and old calipers for cores. I took the backing plates off of mine. They like to hold mud and rocks.

Just to clarify, there are no "backing plates" with a disc setup. What you are referring to is really a dust shield. (And yes, I usually take mine off as well because they tend to hold mud, rocks, small animals etc. in there.)

A backing plate usually refers to the part to which all the drum brake hardware attaches.

I don't want folks to get confused. :)

    Front axle snapring is unnecessary.
