    Guys,

I took my choke apart for cleaning and wasn't smart enough to pay adequate attention to how the spring was wound. The way I have it now there is just barely any tension holding it closed. Would not take much unwinding to open it.

    Thanks,
    Chilly

If you took the coil out, there are only two ways that it can go back. Put it together, run the engine and see if the choke opens. 50-50 chance.

Or dunk it in hot water and see which way it turns.

You realize that the end of the coil has to go into the fork on the choke plate shaft? If you get it in, turning the housing will open and close the choke plate.

I never took the coil out of the plastic cap. I have the tip in the fork. Maybe you are underestimating my ignorance: what I am wondering is if I need to preload the coil with a full revolution biasing it closed, or do I just connect it so it is just barely held shut?

No preload. Just turn it so the choke plate barely closes. Your rebuild kit should have an adjustment procedure.

It's very possible and likely there is also a small hash mark on the edge of the cap that corresponds to the marks on the choke housing. It'll be easy to see if there is.
