So, if I may ask, do they call it air gap or end play? Cause in my experience those are two different things altogether. Guess if I wasn't so lazy I'd go find the instructions and read them again :).

Well, the end play has to be correct before you can get the air gap within specs.

Well I'm dumb as a rock but I'll try and explain

By shimming the end play on the distributor you are also changing the gap between the module and the magnetic ring

I would think the gap would be increased by doing so

But I'm no mechanic and certainly there are others on this board that can set me straight

Pertronix calls it air gap and doesn't speak about end play

I hope to stab the distributor in tonight so well see if it was worthwhile:)

Forgive my brain fart there, I just remembered how the Pertronix works and also why you might want to use something other than a metallic feeler gauge. Magnets. I'll just go sit in the corner now and play with my bunny with a pancake.

The only way shimming the end play will change the air gap is if you add/ subtract shims on both ends of the distributor shaft. You only add them to the bottom/ gear end, though. Add shims if needed to get the end play within spec so that the air gap, after it's adjusted, will be within tolerance. IIRC the air gap is supposed to be .020"-.060", so the end play needs to be .040" or less.
