I'm working on setting up the front Wagoneer axle, and since I'm going SOA, the passenger side spring perch has to be ground into the differential. I've tried doing a search for this in a few places, but I only ever see it mentioned, not explained. I'm not sure how to go about doing this, how have you guys worked this out? Do I grind enough off to weld on an actual spring perch, or do i just try to grind a flat surface into the cast iron? Does anyone have a picture of what they have done?

    Thanks for the help

I am going to jsut weld the perch on the cast part when i get it. you can grind it flat to make a mount. but you can weld a perch on it. just have to make sure it is even with the other side because you will have a bit of a differnce in height if you do not modify it

I don't have much experience with stick welding, but it wouldn't be that hard to figure out I suppose... does anyone know which rod to use for welding cast iron? I could make that work if I had to, but I'd rather find a solution where I could rotate the perch for adjustment without having to customize it every time I want to change it.

How structural is the cast iron part surrounding the tube there? Could it be ground away to get to the axle tube below it? I'm guessing no, but if that would work it might be the easiest.

I've been avoiding welding to the cast iron, but that might be the way to go in the end.

i just found out it int cast iron but cast steel. So supposidly no need for special rods. Grinding all the way through the housing to the tube is probably not a good diea. not sure how far the tube actually goes in, and that is alot of metal to grind down.

I think Rubicon Express has a perch made just for that application. http://www.rubiconexpress.com/ You might have to call then about it as I'm not sure it's on their online catalog.

Scartch that previous post. Foothill Offroad Products has the spring perch. Part # FO1920 for 2.5" or FO1910 for 2" springs. www.foothilloffroad.com (530)889-2021

Rubicon Express also sells that same type of perch, and I bought a few of those. It solved my problem on the rear axle, but the perch on the front axle is completely on top of the cast metal. I'm going to modify a regular spring perch to fit over the cast part.

Now on to the hardest part of the buildup, tracking down the right shackle bushings.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I could be wrong, but I thought the one from Foothill had a short side that went over the casting.
