I recently acquired a new toy, a 1962 willys CJ6, with a 134-f and a 3 speed. It is in need of some serious love to say the least, but I only payed $500 for it, so I can't complain too much.

    To start with the good...
    Its a 62 willys jeep!!!
    The engine runs
    Frame Solid
    .....?

    What I know needs work
    Floorboards
    Rear axle needs remounted
Front brakes/hub/locking hubs (parts on the way from SIDSCJ!)
Tranny and T-case leak like a sieve
    Wiring
Much more to come I'm sure...

Here are a couple pics (sorry about the quality... I took them with my phone)

I think the radiator is not stock, as the ports on it are slightly smaller than the ones on the engine. Also there is a lot of other lousy shade tree mechanic work done to this guy.

I noticed when it was running that there was an exhaust leak coming from the manifold. It turned out one of the studs was missing on the #1 cylinder and someone had run a phillips head bolt into it. I started taking off the rest, broke 1 and called it quits for the night, i'll hit it again this weekend with the mapp gas.

My biggest concern right now is that the transmission and transfercase leak a ton. After not quite a week in my garage I have sizeable puddles under each.
So they are going to have to come out and be looked at. Are these guys worth tearing apart and rebuilding, or should I look at replacing them? I do have the powertrain out of a 87 F150 (300 I6, 4 speed, T18 t-case) at my disposal. It is my brothers and the truck has major rust issues, and needs quite a bit of electrical work before it will pass inspection, but the drivetrain is solid. Any thoughts on swapping basically the whole driveline into my jeep, I was thinking even axles, as that would give be much better brakes.

of course the trans and tc are worth saving.....it's all about what you want to end up with and how much your willing to spend in the process.......rebuilding would be the simplest and most cost efficent.......... imho

BKD, how does yours run with the 302 and T18 transmission, What did you get your motor and transmission out of?

I love the look and character of the old jeep, but I'm afraid that the stock driveline will leave me wanting more. What is a good 134-f engine and transmission and t-case that need rebuilding worth? Also how difficult/expensive is it to rebuild a transmission and transfer case out of one of these guys?

my motor is a 5.0 HO out of a 88 Lincoln, and it runs great.....my build thread is 27 pages back and is long , but the swap starts here http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?44099-Project...Kahuna-66-cj6/page37...........
I like it but it was a PIA........many here have the dauntless V6 which if I were starting over I'd consider seriously, or a chevy 350............what ever you do plan it out with a eye toward cost and time, I've found it always takes longer and costs more than I expect............and rebuilding the existing componets has been covered on this forum extensively and is very doable so if you go that route just post up your questions and you'll get the help you need
    good luck, Jim

After a bout with not doing much except longingly looking at the jeep in the garage I got back to work this week. My brother and I replaced the broken left front hub and put a newly acquired backing brake plate on it (still need to do it to passenger side). I have removed the exhaust manifold, as the front bolt was broken off at some point in the past and a small hole was drilled and a sheet metal screw ran in to secure the manifold. :(

While removing the other bolts I broke the majority of the off, so I have been drilling them out and putting a heli-coil in their place.

I decided to pop the top cover off of the transmission and to my surprise it looked to be in decent shape (in need of a flush and cleaning for sure though). I dont see any chipped gears and I may not have to tear into it after all.

There was clearly water in the transmission, t-case, and differential's as when I began to drain them, clean water came out first, and then a brown muckish sludge... The gears on everything look good though, so I think it is usable.

Anything I need to be worried about specifically with the water/oil condition in the driveline? I know I need to clean and flush everything, but are there any specific components that should be replaced, and or a best way to clean the old residue off of these guys?

    thanks for the input!
