i just pulled my 1962 f head motor to redo all the seals/gaskets. in the back of the block there are two holes in the block? they are small 1/8 inch round holes that dont seem to go anywhere. they don't really look like they're rusted out. i blew some compressed air in them to see where they went and seems like no where. they don't go in very deep. they are in the block below the head and spaced about 6" apart, one a little lower than the other. are they vent holes, casting defect? what are these???

can't figure out how to post my pic.

Your gas peddle linkage attachs there.
    Do you have a FSM.

One way is to use an image hosting site like http://tinypic.com/.
Download the picture from your computers hard drive to the site and the site will give you a link wrapped in VBB code, [IMG]. Add that to your post and it will show up here.

One possibility for those might be that the oil filter bracket for the cab over FC's was mounted on the back of the block and those holes may be there for that. I have a couple sitting down at the shop and will take a look.

It's been a while but I believe Andrew is correct, those are for 2 1/4 inch bolts to attach a throttle linkage bracket.

All the throttle linkages I have seen on the Willys CJ5's has been on the side of the block. I think the one on my CJ2A was on the side of the block, but it has been more than 30 years since I had that one.

This same block was used for some time, earlier CJ'S had linkage similar to a cludch Z bar. The linkage went from the gas pedal to the Z bar on the back of the block and pulled the carb throttle rod back. I looked but can't find pictures on the net.

    Maybe some of the flatheads?

The F-head mounts the carb with the linkage from left to right on top of the head it's self.

The 2A uses those holes for throttle linkage. Don't ask why I remember them so well.

Those holes are for the foot starter linkage.

If you don't need them don't worry about the holes. They don't go into the oil galleys or water jacket so nothing will gush out if you don't fill them with a bolt.
