Yet another post regarding my exhaust leak. I figure it's best to post separate threads for ease of future searches.

Yeah, I know I was warned about the Crown gasket set I installed but I had it in hand and ya know.... So now I have leaks and I WILL get the recommended gaskets. I found Fel-Pro MS9982 at local FLAPS for $14 and I seem to remember Fel-Pro being recommended before. Is this the P/N for that set? If not what is and if not a local purchase where do I get it?

Here's some pictures showing what things look like. And yes, I was very careful when torquing and re torquing.

BTW - I have to say that the help and info I've gotten here has been really great and I appreciate everyone who takes the time to respond.

That gasket just plain didn't fit well...

Yeah, looking at the pics you can see that the cut out in the gasket is much bigger than the exhaust port. In the first picture (#6) you can see that the hole is too big and extends beyond the flange. I never noticed it because I mounted the gaskets on the engine and it didn't look wrong. With no support it never would have held. I wonder if the FepPro gasket better matches the ports.

Has anyone used Remflex gaskets? Expensive but I'm told that they will seal about anything.

Re which gasket set, Felpro products are typically very good quality. I have '85 manifolds on my '77 258, so I tossed a coin and got gaskets for a '85. They needed a little trimming, but the ports matched well - nothing like what you show. I used MS90949, but MS9982 likely would have fit better.

Most years used no exhaust gasket. The intake has a gasket, but the exhaust goes iron to iron. What are your manifold and cylinder head surfaces like?

Remflex are popular with header users.

FWIW, I use only Fel Pro, on my own stuff and all of my customers' vehicles...

The manifold and block surfaces look good Tim. No pitting or erosion. The manifolds look flat with a steel straight edge but that isn't exactly precision.

I read that ports 1 and 6 can be problems because of the long manifold, so that and my crappy gasket were certainly ingredients for failure.

Unless anyone has additional input I guess I'll go with the Fel-Pro's. Patrick recommends them and he charges people for his work so that's a pretty good recommendation for me.

I use Felpro whenever I can.
I got an insiders tour of their manufacturing facility when my company was supplying engines for their dyno lab. Top notch place.

I tried to go without the exhaust gasket when I just recently replaced the intake gasket. Surfaces were good and it wasn't leaking audibly but my exhaust to intake heat riser gasket failed when the burned out stud threads pulled out. Since I had to take everything back apart to back-nut the studs, I could see the soot where it was leaking without the exhaust gasket. Since the new felpro kit comes with both intake and exhaust gaskets, I but both in this time.

I got the gasket set from Rock Auto

I ordered the Felpro gaskets today and should have them tonight. Getting them tonight will allow me to start work early in the morning to avoid the heat. It's been in the high 90's here all week, too hot too soon. Arizona weather in Georgia :)

DREDnot - I do check out Rock Auto and if I can't get it locally I get it from them. They have almost everything and they seem to have the cheapest and most reasonable shipping charges of any web based parts supplier.

Quick update - No Leaks.....crossing fingers.

Got the gaskets this morning from another store because the first store delivered a box that looked like it was folded in two. Arrrrgh. I had to drive a distance to pick another one up this morning. The construction and quality and of the Felpro gasket was obvious and cost no more then the Crown gasket. Took a brief test ride and it's nice not to sound like a steam engine.

    Thanks all.
