personally I will never switch my oil bath over. For off road and dusty conditions that my 62 sees it will stay!

There have been many posts here on that question. (Try search.) Many agree the oil bath is desirable.

i did do a search before posting, nothing came up. and, with all due respect, the question was not which do you prefer, it was, if you changed yours out, what did you use.

I used a K&N I got from Summit. You have to order one based on the diameter of the carb opening. My filter is about 3" tall or so. I can't remember the number, but it can be found.

I understand your question was about alternatives not preferences. But you wrote "i'd like to switch over to a new style for convienence and less maintenance" and I feel that I don't see any inconvenience or extra maintenance to having an oil bath. Takes about two minutes to service occasionally. Certainly less effort than driving to the parts store for a new filter.

The one I posted is a style to mount on the original air horn. You can even keep the OEM oil bath on the firewall. An off brand would run you even less $$, and buy local and save the shipping. If you get a washable style, there's no more parts to buy. HTH.

I would use a paper element, if I were going to convert. I would also use a foam wrap on the paper element.

    Here's an article: http://www.1945gpw.com/c-80-G503_WWII_Jeep_Oil_Bath_Air_Filter_conversion_to_Dry_Air_Filter.aspx

There are lots of articles on the web about converting oil-bath air cleaners to a paper element.

Not a big fan of the K&N filters. They are good for a street car, but I believe they improve air flow by simply reducing the amount of filtering. I have seen oil analysis data that shows a higher silicon content in diesel applications equipped with a K&N filter.

If I were to change my air cleaner, I would go with the paper element posted by timgr....For now, it stays with the oil bath cleaner...I haven't yet had any problems with it......:hurrican:...:coffee:

thanks for the reply guys! i had a 56 chevy about 15 years ago, it also had the oil bath air cleaner. i never did any maintenance on it, but i swapped out the motor after only 6 months of driving it. if they are pretty maintenance free, then i'll just keep it. my concern was reading the old jeep tune up manual said something about changing the oil every 1000 miles, and every 500 if the jeep is off road much. that kinda freaked me out and sounded like a pain in the butt. but if they are good and hassle free, i guess i'll keep it. thanks again!
