Hi I am working on my 54 M38A1 And some wise person tried to put a Saginaw steering box on the frame and failed. It steers but it looks scary and even the pitman arm has been welded together. I've decided to remove it and convert back to a Ross system I purchased a Ross box with steering shaft and pitman arm and draglink together. The owner claims it came off a V-6 CJ and was wondering how to confirm. It has a stamp of 2 69, and three sets of numbers on different locations on the box they are TI 13234DH, TL 122987, and LT 125999. Does anybody know what these mean? And also does anybody know what size bolts are used to remount the Ross box to the frame? do I use grade 5 or 8? Thanks for considering these questions Mike

mike - ross steering was used untill 1971 - it didn't matter if 4 cylinder or six .did steering come with bell crank you'll need it to go back to stock steering - I would use grade 8 7/16-NF . you didn't say if you have steering tube and wheel

TL-13234 is the most common Ross box used.
It was used in both F4 and V6 applications
It was also used with the 7/8" diameter bellcrank
The above information comes from the factory parts manual and observations of the manual.
There was a later Ross box used specifically with the V6 option and is more desireable to some folks.

Why not get a new pitman arm & fix what you've got, rather than going back to 1941 technology? Unless you're going for a full resto, that is...

That's what I was thinking, too. Fix the PO's mistakes and you've got upgraded steering on the cheap (possibly).
