My '53 M38a1 has had an 11" brake conversion done to it. I need to replace the shoes. They look a little thin. How do I know what to ask for at the parts store (or online as the case may be)? I can't tell you what brakes they are off of or when they we're put on. How can I tell what I have?

Or, is an 11" brake shoe an 11" brake shoe?

    Thanks
    Dondo

If your conversion was done with jeep parts just ask for parts for a 72 CJ5.

How do I know if it was done with Jeep parts? I'm assuming it was, but I can't be totally sure. I suppose I could just take a shoe in and compare it to a 72 CJ shoe.

I can't think of any other parts that can be used for the conversion but Jeep parts.

Post some pics here and/or look at the 11" write up conversion mruta provided for us and compare there too.

BUT there may be other methods of converting that I'm not aware of.

Two other possibilities I can think of: Wagoneer, or Ford/Mercury.

The hardware is different for the 11x2" Wagoneer brakes, so I presume the shoes would be different too. If the CJ shoes are wrong, try Wagoneer shoes - should be the same from 1963 to 1973.

IIRC F100 backing plates and hardware will work too - this would be from before disk brakes, say pre-1968. I think these are Bendix, just like a CJ, so they may not be different. They do have the same type of hardware as an intermediate CJ.

An old-time swap was Mercury brakes - I presume these were from a mid-50s passenger car. Donors for this swap are scarce nowadays.

mid 70's (75) dj50's (2x4 dispatch) fit also, i believe. ( i hope since i'm having front and rear backs drums, and guts pulled for me. from a 75. i measured the inside of the drums and they're 11" at $12.50 each wheel.)
