I read somewhere that a CJ-5 fuel tank can bolt underneath in the rear of a 3B with little modification. I presume they were talking about 5s with rear tanks, what would be the cross section of years that 5s have rear tanks and frames like 3Bs (with the towing hitch A frame support---under the bed, the triangle with two points on each side of the frame and the third on the rear crossmember)?

There weren't many details and I read this in passing a while ago, but I'd like to pursue this option. The person who installed the biodiesel conversion in my flattie put a dedicated heated biodiesel tank inside the rear of the tub; it takes up room, makes the tailgate pointless, and will be too hot for my dogs in the summer. I've got an offer for a free '84 CJ7 tank, but from what I can tell the frames are too different to make it work.

Were there any 5s with rear tanks that still had the hitch supports that went at angles to the frame (by this I mean the squared part in the attached picture)?

In this thread http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72742 there is a post:
Is there a known method like this for pintle hitches (no drawbar)?

I pull all of that out and make a new cross member with the rear of the frame when I put rear tanks in. There is not enough room to make it worth doing without changing all of that IMO.

    K. Sounds like if I must keep the supports then I need to pursue a custom option and I may not have much room to make it worth it.

    Thanks.

If anyone has wisdom for adapting/replacing two angled hitch supports in order to make room for the rear tank while retaining pintle strength, please let me know.

Pretty much as Chuck noted. If you leave your diagonal braces in there you will either have a very shallow custom tank or on with the skid plate 4" off the ground. A new rear cross member is the way to go and can be built so that the pintle hitch will still bolt up if needed. I ran arms forward on both the sides and top of the frame rails and built inserts for inside the frame that are tapped and threaded so the frame section is sandwiched between them and the roll bar mounts (visible under body) are bolted to the top leg.
