PO installed new gas tank and filler tube; looks like everything done right. But, I have always had to trickle the gas into the tank or else the automatic shut off on the pump will activate. Can't even come close to setting it on the first notch of automatic fill on the gas pump; it will shut off immediately. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Is the vent hose connected? This is a crucial piece because it lets air escape the tank as fuel goes in. Without it the fuel will get backed up in the filler neck trying to get in as air comes out. Sort of like turning a 2-liter soda bottle upside down, the soda will go out, but not smoothly, it will glob and gurgle as the soda has to make way for air coming into the bottle to replace it. But if you turn the bottle upside down and poke a hole in the other end for air to get in, the soda will go gushing out the neck smoothly.

My CJ5 was always very picky about the position of the fuel nozzle. It would shut off unless you held it just right. If your vent hose is connected properly and it's still shutting off, try rotating the nozzle in the filler neck to see if there's a sweet spot that lets the fuel go in without triggering the auto shut off.

I'm with pathkiller, vent tube. Seen it on various cars before. If the vent tube is in place you might hit it with some compressed air to blow out whatever has it clogged.

For the record, I have to fill my gas tank with the fuel nozzel upside-down. Otherwise, I get fuel all over my fancy red paint. That is WITH the vent installed correctly.

One more thing to try.... start out the pump slowly and gradually speed up to full speed over 10 seconds. Works fine for me.

Evening... also in agreement with Pathkiller... in fact.. already have a (clear) newer style (the old hose slightly crimped and impeded vented vapors) vent hose replacement..

As a check: we used duck-bill pair of pliers (ie: vice-grips for locking closed and slowly opening with handle screw etc.) and pinched off the vent hose on the fill tube from the tank while a friend attempted to fill my 15 gallon fuel tank... finding: fuel tank would NOT fill without allowing some vent vapors to equalize the fuel to air displacement within the tank... fuel has a solid hydraulic effect and the air displacement will/does build pressure and will actually allow/ cause the tank to burp if filled to an excessive volume. To also clarify, my rear fuel cell is original and has the fill vent line and two other 1/4" pipettes that vent to the vapor canister beneath the rear Drivers side tire/wheel compartment... without the 1/2" fill vent line being open and clear to exchange vapors during the filling... the other vent lines will allow a very slow fill...

Findings: without the 1/2" line being open.. the fill is extremely slow... however, once the vent was open... fuel flowed and Circus tricks involving the fill nozzle were not required.

    hope this was helpful,

    Gunner :flag:
