Oil all over the place

I was working on my 55 cj5, doing an oil change. I pulled off the oil canister to clean it (it was terrible dirty) and re-installed it. I put in a new filter and re-installed the lid. After adding oil, I jumped into the drivers seat and started up the motor. I was listening to the motor warm up when I remembered to get out a look for leaks, too late, there was oil all over the engine and floor. It was coming from the oil canister. At first I thought it was coming from the oil line under the canister, but eventually I realized it was coming from the lid of the canister. I guess I didn't get the lid properly seated with the rubber gasket and the fan blew the oil all over the engine bay. What a mess. I thought I was being very careful when I installed the canister lid, but I think the rubber seal rolled a little. Any tips on the proper way to install the canister lid will be greatly appreciated.

 

i repositioned the lid and tightened it back down.
it hasnt happened since

 

also put a little oil on the gasket face.
