Hi Guys, looking to re-gear, currently have 3.73 with a 4-speed w/ granny low and running 35's. Was thinking of going to 4.88. I was quoted $900 an axel?

Depending on what parts they need to change out, that's probably not too far off the mark. I had both the diffs in one of my trucks changed from 3.55 to 4.10 for ~1600 IIRC, that was about 7 years ago. Shop labor generally runs around $70-$100 per hour.

Going from 3.73 to 4.88 should not require a case change, so you will save a little there. I would shop around for a good shop with a decent price.

If that includes all parts it's not bad. I had a D44 rebuilt a couple years ago for $375 which included labor and new bearings, but not gears or a carrier.

Very similar to what I paid 2 years ago to have a GM 14 Bolt FF done. In the ballpark anyway.

since I was young,,,,,had time and wanted to learn ......I bought the diff install tools from Miller and have set up mine and a few others. they are still alive( and I ab-USE mine) so I must have done something right .....

if it was just a gear change it is a little bit easier to set up , you can figure out using the shims you already have installed on the old gear and get it close on the first try for the new ratio , the problem with a case change is you really have to start from scratch.

price the gears and install kit thats probably $300? then the rest is labor , 5 hrs labor for a new case install sounds to me about right .

I just paid last week $1000 for the labor only. I bought my own parts and that ran just under $600 + shipping.

It was cheaper for me to buy my own parts...saved about $250 doing it that way.

This was in one of my comanches with a ff 14 bolt rear and a 10 bolt front. The labor they quoted me was $375 rear and $525 front (more to take apart) and then I ended up needing u-joints and spindle bearings up front too.

I can remember 10 years ago regearing a TJ and I got it out the door with parts AND labor for under $1200. Darned inflation!! mehh

You may be able to shave a few hundred if they are willing to work with you and have YOU shop and order the parts they need. I have done that several times....just a thought.
