My "stock" CJ5 has a roll-bar but it's not bolted on utilizing all the bolt holes in the mounting plates. Makes me suspicious that it was an add-on.

Can someone enlighten me as to when bars were added?

    Thanks!

Part of the Renegade package from '70 on.

Not a factory option by itself until 1974 (or 1975?). Factory roll bars are painted the body color.

Thanks for responding Tim. I'm confused though (no surprise), in this pic it shows a black bar on a yellow CJ...

    Not factory. Dealer installed accessory. That's a '72 or a '73.

Nothing wrong with that - it's the same roll bar that the factory would later start supplying as original equipment. But it was not on the option list until later.

I think the body color rollbars were part of the Renegade package

Interesting that the '75 brochure has no pictures of chrome bumpers. I thought the chrome bumpers were available on all the intermediates, but maybe not.

Of course, you could put them on at the dealership, out of the parts department. But the '72 brochure implies that they are factory options.

Yes, the roll bar was part of the Renegade package. AFAIK all the factory roll bars were body color (maybe not Ren 1s?) By factory, I mean that they were put on the Jeep at the factory and rolled off the transport with a roll bar. They were also listed on the option sheet. But they did not appear on the option sheet by themselves until later.

At some point in the '74-75 period, both roll bars and Warn hubs moved from exclusively dealer installed to factory installed optional equipment. There was a lot of optional equipment that was "Jeep Approved" and dealer installed. Air conditioning in a CJ is a good example. The factory also had trouble in this era with parts disappearing from Jeeps on the rail cars. Going dealer-installed with desirable accessories was a way to get around this problem.
