I'm thinking about a dual wheel mod to my CJ for winter wheeling. Anyone have experience with such?

IMO, duallys suck in the snow. Skinny tires would be best.

I go by Diggerjeep. My jeep came to me with a dual setup on it. The jeep originally was an industrial version, with a grader blade on the front and trencher on the back. The rear is a Dana 70 (not a 60), with dual 700-16 military tires.

However, this has proven to be somewhat restrictive. With dual wheels, you have to watch the tire widths. I can't change the tires to newer radials, since the sidewalls bulge too much.

Yes, Duals look cool, but the tread width is limited to about 12" if both tires are flat on the ground. With dual wheels, you have twice as much wheel mass to stop, so braking can be not so good, especially if you have 10 or 11" drum brakes.

If I was you I would consider just going for wider wheels and tires. Just yesterday I picked up a used pair of 32x11.5 x15 rims and tires for $60.

I have some pictures posted of my jeep on my intro page.

I have no experience with the dual wheel adapters which used to be sold by JC Whitney which bolt together two standard 5 x 5 1/2 wheels for dual setup.

    Hope this helps

Skinny singles for snow. I single up my deuce's duals when I drive in the snow. More weight in smaller area gives you better traction. IMHO.
