I used a heavy aluminum piano hinge on the bottom (McMaster-Carr item) so when the door is open, there is not much of a lip to impede access. Overall, not as convenient as the stock arrangement with stock seats, but still works well and you don't have to move anything to get at it.

BTDT!!! Couple 6-packs and a bag of ice. Worked real good till I put the dual exhaust on it. Ofcourse, by that time, I got a little smarter and and the law got quite a bit less tolerant so, it's a tool box now, like the factory design intended it for. Cargo space is valuable so it gets packed full when heading out. Gets hot in there with that muffler 2" below it. Might make a better oven than cooler now.

I had highbacks in the CJ5 at one point, but as others mentioned it is almost impossible to get to the lid. I fixed that by cutting out the vertical part of the front and just sliding stuff under from the front floor.

I'm using hi backs right now. Wonder about reversing the hinges on the tool box lid to make it accessible. Ya know, move the hinges to the front side so the lid opens opposite from how it does now.

I did that on my cj6....the highbacks tilted forward catch on the upper windshield and I have about 12-16" to open the lid......works for me

that is cool then just hook a strap t the seat and it'll open up when you lift the seat up, think that'll be a project for me
