Brake shoes may be too tight. Go in the back of the backing plate through the slot and back the star wheel down. Auto adjusted or manual adjusted brakes have this slot and a star wheel for adjusting the brakes. Adjusting the star wheel will take the pressure off the brake shoes.

I use an acorn nut on the wheel stud (the chrome kind which is closed at one end, used on mag wheels and such) when I have to remove a stud. The acorn nut is longer than a standard wheel nut, and thus covers more of the threaded area. I turn the nut down until it is less than 1/8" from the hub. I then hit the end with a hammer to drive the stud part way out, enough to clear the drum, but not all the way out of the hub. Haven't bent or damaged a stud doing it this way.
