I recall Christian telling me that the Perkins was pretty peppy, esp. when you consider what the F-head is like to drive. I could believe it.

Probably "feel" faster due to low end torque, much like the older VW TDIs.

The motor needs to be rebuilt. The only info I have is that it knocked very loudly.

I belive it will need a tear down.

If you got time pull a engine oil sample and have it diagnosed. Take it to a heavy equipment dealer that does oil samples, they can tell how much metal is in the oil and a bunch of other things.

Go to a CAT dealer. I work for one and they all do oil sampling.

    I don't believe it's a 61'. It's likely a 63 or 63 from what I can see. At least I know it was delivered with the Perkins.

I haven't heard of oil testing. Very interesting....thank you!

It's not in the driveway yet. I need to think about what to offer. Tough one.

I noticed that strapping as well. It's on the other side as well. :? You say that's typical of the 6? Is it there for additional strength?

It's a T-90 3 speed, not a T-98. That was one of the forst things I checked. Any other wisdom on which tranny they normally came with? There was evidence that the tranny/transfer was pulled for sure.

Yes, though my '75 does not have it. Seems that most or all of the earlier ones have it. Strength. Increases the load rating of the frame.

Don't know about the transmission. A T-98 or T-18 in an early or intermediate CJ has distinctive floor pans, so swapping to the T-90 requires changing a bunch of other stuff. Since this one has the T-90, I presume transmissions options were the same as with the F134, ie the T-90 and the T-98.

Is that the one @ Wayne's ?? Rt 30 maybe?? Looks like his lot. IIRC, I saw that one a few years ago, he wasn't in a selling mood when I saw him.

looks like the tailgate was changed as well, at least to my eyes.
is the VIN plate attached correctly using rivets ?
just curious if the tub was replaced at some time.

It is riveted on, but those don't look like factory rivets; at least not like mine.

I noticed the tailgate as well but didn't pay too much attention to that. It must have been damaged and replaced at some point. That will be easy to replace.

The VIN plate has the correct rivets from what I can see. Certainly not screwed on. There is a picture above.

There's no indication that the tub has been repaced. I'm certain the drivers side panel was replaced in the 70's because of an accident.

Can you post a pic of your plate?

I'd be interested in anyone elses comments about the plate mounting and also what the numbers are all about. It's not a 61 as the owner stated based on the serial....at least that's what I think.

pictures have a way of not telling the whole story
and I have no reason to doubt any thing that's been mentioned
    just my observations
flattys have screws that hold the VIN plate on
I assumed an early CJ would too.

:pIf you want it, buy it. It looks like it's a great buy and it's a diesel! Would be interesting and fairly unique. That's just my .02:)
