    I just inherited a Buick 231 V6. Checking on the V6 page of the Tech section, I found it is a 1979-81 engine. Funny thing it has a factory appearing Holley dual plane four barrel manifold. If anyone has a clue to what may be in this engine, i.e. special performance options, speak up. I got it for nothing, and it appears to be in good working order. Trick is what to do with it? My :v6: has 5000 miles on last year's rebuild. I'm happy with it, but sometimes have the idea of upgrading to a SBC. For now, it can just sit. Can this thing be built to eventually replace the dauntless with more performance? Or is it trade bait? All opinions are welcome.

    I have 2 231's and 4 225's - Personally I like the 225 over the 231, but you can get some more performance parts for the 231's... Keep it for a 'spare'. You never know when a 'great jeep that only needs an engine' will appear.

    And once you have two - they really start to breed.

    What is the block number on that? (rear of block above trans mount or lower side of block)

    4bbl was never stock except for carb'd turbos and 4.1's. There is some Kenne Bell stuff floating around out there but mainly speed parts. The Holley manifold is probably an older speed part --worth keeping though!

    Block number is 1261787. I know what you mean about the Jeeps multiplying. After I got my '67, people came out of the woodwork with old Jeeps they wanted me to buy. I really never gave it serious consideration, but now with the '05 and the '67 sitting in the garage with an unattached 231, anything can happen. The spare idea is kinda where I am now, but I know many of you have different experiences and ideas. I may build a monster Jeep in the future.

    1261787 = 1978-79

    Big difference is what heads are on it. 1979 went to the much improved "high-port" heads. Look for heads stamping #1262098 under the valve covers which should match to 1979. #1257051 was 1978 old style heads. It is not exactly clear when GM switched over to the new heads.

    IIRC, HPw as 105 in 1978 and 115 in 1979 based on the heads being redesigned. (note HP measuring methods changed from the Dauntless days so it looks shocking ;) )

    Well how does 1257722 grab you? I just checked the head casting numbers and that is what they say.
