F Head Spark Plugs

I'm having a mech do some work to my 60 CJ5. I'm out of town, so I'm going by what the guy is telling me over the phone. It goes like this:

I asked him to put new plugs in it. From several posts here, I understand that while the FSM recommends a J8 plug. However, the current J8 is about 1/8" "shorter" than it should be. The Champion L86C was a recommended replacement.

So, I have the guy get the Champion L86C and install. He tells me that when it runs, he can hear gasses escaping through the plug bores - with the plugs securely installed.

Did I spec the wrong plugs ? Or, do I have highly worn threads in the plug bores? If it's leaking gas, I assume that it will erode the bores.

Any input from y'all will be much appreciated.

I use Autolite 295 plugs, they work fine. I don't know what the deal is with the gases escaping.

    Glenn - appreciate the info.

Dos - I don't know, but I'll check with him. I guess there's a good reason they supplied them with the plugs.

    Thanks for the input, gents.

Trying to keep forward motion on the jeep project by long distance may not be the smartest move I've made. Really want to have it on the road by spring.

Good call on the gaskets, could be the problem.

I just called advanced auto looking for champion l86c plugs, and they said they didn't have any, but the Autolite 425 crossreferenced to this. They also said there isn't an Autolite 295. Did they change the part numbers again?

I bought Autolite 295 plugs earlier this year from Advance Auto.

Yeah I searched on advanced auto's website and it said they had some in stock at that location.... don't know what the parts girl was doing? I'm gonna pick some up today and hopefully I can get the Jeep started :)

Earlier this year I walked into the one near me and said plainly: I need 6 Autolite 295 spark plugs. Of course the parts girl goes straight to the computer and says what vehicle is this for? :D Most of the employees are Spanish speaking, so the guy there immediately tells her in Spanish where they were located. I could tell that he was telling her that I had already said exactly what I needed. It was ok though, cause she was young and good lookin! :D

Finally got home and checked in on the CJ. dos equis, you called it. The young mech left out the "gaskets" - it's running like a champ now. Once again, appreciate all the helpful advice. Don't know what I'd do without this site - essential if you're not a gearhead. Y'all have a great Xmas and New Year!

I think its pretty easy to leave those out if you aren't paying attention. I just replaced mine and went throught the boxes afterwards based on this thread, and wouldn't ya know, I had a gasket in one of the boxes. Oops!
