I have the original type of oil filter. P/O had an Allen head bolt keeping the lid on and it leaked oil. I replaced it with an appropriate bolt, but am concerned with how hard I should clamp down on the bolt. Do I tighten it down until it is snug like a regular bolt, therby crushing the rubber gasket beyond recognition, or what?

I used the search function but didn't see my problem.

just do it a little bit tight.
put it on .start the jeep.
see if it leaks and if it does tighten it a little bit more.

I crank mine pretty tight, never had a problem with it. There should be a gasket that goes between the bolt and the cover and a rubber seal between the cover and oil filter canister.

I usually go 1/2 turn on the bolt after it starts to tighten. Seems to work for me.

OK, thanks gentlemen. There's a spring that sits on top of the filter element that pushes the inner steel washer and fiber washer against the lid and ensures the filter stays put that provides a counter force after the bolt touches the lid. Compressing the spring has been worrying me but it seems hit and miss, or, sort of a calibrated crescent wrench to know when enough's enough.
