I have a 225 block with 231 heads, the 225 oils through the rocker shafts and the 231 oils through the pushrods. I have the old 225 rocker shafts which according to the v6 performance book are better than the stamped steel ones for 75 and up. the book also said if I oil the 225 rockers through the push rods they wont get enough oil at idle. A buick guy that really knows his stuff said it should be fine. I was wondering If any of you guys are oiling 225 rockers through the push rods and if it will work. I guess they are a better ratio than the stamped ones too. 1.6 compared to 1.55. I have a High volume oil pump installed as well...if that makes a difference.

Have you looked into Pat G's book on it? I have been doing some reading focused on replacing the rockers (replicate the old Kenne Bell setups that I have) but have not run across the oiling issue. I know that there are 2 ports in the assembly for the 225 to allow the oil up (had an issue in a build with them), but am not as familure with the 231 in that area.

ya my block has the ports to allow the oil up..but my heads don't because they are 231(the holes are not there.) I do have the pat G book and it says that there wont get enough oil at idle. the ta performance guy said it should be fine though. I don't know who to believe. I have replacement stamped steel rockers and shafts but they are for newer 231s with the cast in pedestals. I would have to enlarge the bolt holes slightly to make them work..they are hardened though so i figured it would be a pain in the butt. the 225 cam is made for the old style 1.6 rockers and the pat g says they are better than the stamped steel ones so i figured I would use it. how does the spring side of the rocker get oiled? just by splashing?

I think you're best bet is to choose your oiling system 225 or 231. In your case I'd find a set of 225 heads and use them. I wouldn't try modifying the 231 heads to accept the 225 rocker arms pedestals.

The oil seeps down the rocker shafts to oil the rocker assembly.

these 231 heads are the early 75-76 style which have the same pedestals as a 225 not the cast pedestals like 77 up.these heads are ported and polished by kenne bell and have bigger valves etc so im not gonna part with em lol here is a pic of the pedestals [IMG]

Not sure what they did with the heads, but the valve train works with either oiling from Kenne Bell
