I am looking for a doner truck for my "new" engine for my Cj3a. I aready have a old 60,s 307 in it so I thought a 4.3 would be a good replacement. The bell housing is suspect as well. There are some s10,s around here with manual trans. has anybody used this combo. Thanks

4.3 makes a great engine in my opinion! I have found it to be best to find a running S10 for cheep so you get everything!
This is pretty common swap in my area.

I just did a s-10 4.3 swap in my 3b went fairly easy except issues with elect fan hitting water pump (Very tight fit front to back in eng compartment but lots room side to side)[IMG]

If you already have a 307, then another small block Chevy (283, 327, 350 etc.) would bolt right in. The 4.3 is essentially a small block minus 2 cylinders, so it would be an easy swap, too.

Can't think of any reason why you would not want to stay with the V8 since everything is already set up for it. There is usually little to no difference in the mileage and there is a lot of difference in the torque. I have not added up the costs of my last two 350 rebuilds but it is a good bet they were as cheap as a 4.3 V6, and way cheaper than a 225. If you want to just build the 307, put a 350 crank in it with a set of 400 rods for a torquey long stroke 328.

I guess the main reason for going down to the 4.3 would be to lose a few lbs. If I keep the small block I still have to do somthing about the bell housing and redo the motor mounts (old ones are solidly welded to frame with no rubber and are cracked). The old rad is to tall to fit in a saganaw steering swap. I was hoping a good doner truck might help with all this. Thank for your imput so far. Phil
