In the article it says true Jeepers bash the CJ-6. Not any more. I'd love to have one.

If you are going to compare a CJ5 to a CJ6, would you expect them to at least have the same engine/drive train for a valid comparison? The CJ5 had the 232 and the CJ6 had the 304. The CJ5 had an open diff, the CJ6 had a trac lok.

    Cool vintage article.

It has a few other technical inaccuracies. Such as in the fuel economy section where it states that the 258's carburetor has to open up the secondary jets under load whereas the 304 stays in the primaries. Does a one-barrel carb really have secondaries? Or for that matter, does the 304's MC2100 2bbl have secondaries?

I appreciated the article. Use to work at a garage in the area. A Hightower boy used to run car flat track. He told me the story of the 396 JEEP that his father built, it was suppose to be the first one with a Chevy big block in it. They had asked to borrow it for a run in the desert, not to race it. It turned out there was a picture of a CJ going over a jump in a racing magazine. In the article it mentioned that it had a 396 in it. Guess who seen a picture of his JEEP in that magazine.)))

My dad bought a new CJ5 in 1973. One of his buddies bought one with a 232, the cheapest model he could get, and ordered a 401 from the same dealer and had them install it. Dad said the guy had that Jeep less than a week before totaling it in a really nasty high speed rollover. I imagine a 396 powered CJ5 would be quite a trick little pony.

I love reading the old articles. Thanks! I had a 79 Cj5 with the 304, it could make driving a little hairy if you didn't pay attention. Great fun though.... Didn't like the secondaries inaccuracy either. All in all a good article. Thanks again!
