I just pulled apart my '62 D44 rear axle, and discovered that I have a Powerlock carrier. When I removed it, there was no evidence of having inner oil seals. I thought they would be stuck in the inner axle tubes ... just seemed logical. Are they in the carrier?

I'm going to go with a FF axle kit from Herm soon, but wanted to start tearing down the old one. I have an ARB to put in there - can I get started setting that up now, or should I wait on the axle kit? (That's where the seal question comes from, as I'm not sure if there will be one in the kit.)

There are no inner oil seals.

The oil seals are out at the end. Figure 23 in the above picture.

So what keeps the oil in the differential case?

The diff oil is free to slosh around in the housing space between the seals. No harm. Some rearends eliminate the inner wheel bearing seals and allow the bearings to be lubricated by gear oil that is sloshing around.
