For those of you who know such things; when did Jeeps stop placing the spare tire on the right rear of the Jeep and put it on a frame across the back?

I tried the search function to no avail, but, I am certain someone will point out the winning key words that I neglected to think of.

AFAIK the side-mounted spare continued up until the end of the CJ-5 in 1983. There was an optional rear mounted spare with a solid back panel, available as an option from 1973 on (and with the Renegade package a few years earlier). All CJ-5s with a tailgate came with the side-mounted spare.

The CJ-7 had a swing-away spare when equipped with a tailgate. There were accessory swing-away carriers available for the CJ-5 (Kayline and Whitco were the most popular), but they were not available from the factory. Jeep offered the Whitco swing-away as a dealer installed option, but not as factory equipment.

Wow! I had no idea. Color me gobsmacked. I honestly thought they quit around the early to mid sixties. Thank you
